On Monday, November 14, the Skokie Community Fund (the Fund), for the third year in a row, awarded a total of $25,000 to local nonprofit organizations that co-applied for grants to serve Skokie residents and enhance the community.

“We set a new record with the number of grant requests,” said Executive Director, P. Scott Holtz. “The Fund received many proposals, including some from organizations that had not previously applied. These new proposals demonstrate important and creative ways to serve Skokie residents, inspiring the Steering Committee and myself to grow the endowment of the Fund so that more frequent and generous grants can be made in the future.”

Steering Committee Chair, Gene Griffin, said, “We worked hard this year to add more perspective and experience to our steering committee. Our new members, Rachel Rosenberg, Howard Meyer and Zachary Williams together with existing members Maria Franks, Jim Szczepaniak and Brian Williams worked well as a team, diligently reviewing all of the applications. The end result is a group of projects that will offer significant support to Skokie both now and beyond the grant cycle.”

The Fund awarded grants to the following six co-applicants for use in 2017.

Main Niles Association of Special Recreation and Niles Township District for Special Education
After school programming at Molloy Education Center providing Skokie students high quality programming built around individual needs.

Mudlark Theatre Group & Youth & Opportunity United (Y.O.U.)
The grant partners will provide under-served students in Skokie with
literacy and theater programs in their schools. Students will also have the opportunity to experience live theater inspired by their writing and performed by their peers.

Orchard Village, Talking Farm and Niles Township Food Pantry
As partners, Orchard Village residents will receive training from staff at the Talking Farm while providing a steady and significant volume of fresh, organically grown produce to the Niles Township Food Pantry.

The Talking Farm and Niles North High School
Niles North students will start seedlings and selected students will then become interns at the farm during the summer of 2017.

Turning Point Behavioral Health Care Center, National Alliance on Mental Illness and Village of Skokie Police and Fire Departments
Mental health professionals and members of the Skokie police and fire departments will facilitate free community conversations, open to the public and taking place throughout Skokie that will address the approaches used by first responders when dealing with the public with an eye toward de-escalation and sensitivity to mental health issues.

YWCA Evanston/North Shore and Skokie Public Library
“Let’s Talk @ Lunch” series at the Skokie Public Library where participants led by trained facilitators will engage in discussions that will broaden their understanding of the impact of racism on day to day life in Skokie. The program will provide vocabulary and confidence needed to participate in discussions of racial issues in other settings throughout the community.
